4. Application
Potassium chlorate is an important compound that is widely used in various fields, including chemical industry, agriculture, medicine, etc. It is one of the first component used in the production of fireworks because of its explosive nature, where it serves as an oxidizer, which plays an important role in burning the firecracker at a fast rate. And the oxidizing property makes it a component of smoke composition to produce smoke grenades. It also shows a disinfectant effect, commonly used for preparing chlorine dioxide, an effective disinfectant that is often applied to water for eliminating bacteria, viruses, protozoa and odor-causing compounds. Besides, in the laboratory, potassium chlorate can be decomposed into oxygen, which is a far inexpensive source than a pressurized or cryogenic oxygen tank. Therefore, it can be used in medicine to treat pneumonia as well as gas poisoning, and employed as oxygen-supply system of aircraft, space stations, submarines, etc. Studies have proved that potassium chlorate is helpful in the cultivation of dormant tree, such as Longan trees to increase the yield of fruits when treated with potassium chlorate.
