Why the biogas need to be processed
The biogas contains corrosive gas like H2S, and the unprocessed biogas will damage the gas genset and other biogas equipment badly. Therefore, the biogas must need desulfurization and dehydration before using.
There are three ways in biogas desulfurization; they are dry desulfurization, wet desulfurization and biology bio desulfurization. The following will be a selective analysis on dry desulfurization.
Dry desulfurization
Dry desulfurization is an easy operation, high efficiency and low cost way in processing the biogas, which is suitable for the situation like small biogas volume and low concentration in H2S. The basic principle of dry desulfurization is used oxygen to oxidize the H2S to sulphur or oxysulfide, also can call it dry oxidation. Dry desulfurization device has a container to store the material like activated carbon, iron oxide etc. The unprocessed biogas will go through the container in low speed from one side, and then go out from other side after oxidation. The oxysulfide will stay in the container.
Dry desulfurization mainly contains the body (steel structure), desulfurizer container, viewing window, pressure gage, thermometer etc. As usual practice, it will equip two desulfurizer towers, one is for use, and one is for standby use. These two desulfurizer towers will be used in alternation, one is for desulfurization, and one is for regeneration. The biogas contained H2S enter into the bottom of the tower first, and then go through the desulfurizer container, which will cause a chemical reaction:
Step1: Fe2O3 · H2O + 3 H2S = Fe2S3 + 4 H2O (Desulfurization)
Step 2: Fe2S3 + 3/2 O2 + 3 H2O = Fe2O3 · H2O + 2 H2O + 3 S(Regeneration)
During the chemical reaction, the biogas contained H2S will react with the heavy capacity desulfurizer from the bottom of the container, and then react with the low-load desulfurizer from the top of the container. Thanks to the well design in biogas airspeed and line speed, dry desulfurization can reach good desulfurization result
Before the biogas going into the dry desulfurizer tower, it should equip condensate water tank and particle filter, which can remove the impurities in biogas and make the biogas get wet before going into the desulfurization tower.
If the desulfurizers change color or excessive loss in pressure, it needs to change into another desulfurization tower. When all the biogas evacuate, the desulfurization tower should in natural ventilation condition for regenerating the desulfurizer. When the regeneration cannot reach the result anymore, it should remove the desulfurizer from the bottom of the tower and add same amount flesh desulfurizer in reactor.
